Apollo's Academy Coming Soon!

Doors to the Academy Opening SOON!

The mission, purpose, and goal of education is to awaken the soul; to illumine one’s understanding through the activity of the mind’s exposure to knowledge; to apply one’s talents and gifts through training and preparation for service; to expand one’s consciousness to discern truth and to share its effulgent, transcendent nature with others.

It is the duty of those thus educated and awakened to assist others in their trek on this pathway to the Sublime. Apollo’s Academy was expressly built for this purpose.

Participation in Apollo’s Academy will awaken your insight and creativity by exposing you to sources that will quicken and nurture your intuition. It has been suggested and argued that it is intuition which directly apprehends the dynamic relationship with the Divine in the center of our being. Our mission is to explore the world of poetry, particularly mystical literature and thought, to help with the removal of doubt, hesitation; walls which act as self-inflicted barriers to this higher level of existence. Apollo’s Academy will guide you through this journey.

There is no time-table on how long a person will live, and conversely, no limit on what an individual can achieve. We do not know how long we have to accomplish the mission which placed us in this “Parenthesis in Eternity” called life, but we must take what we are to accomplish seriously, and consider each moment we have to reach our goal as a gift.

Lovers and seekers of Truth should join the Academy in order to continue the journey with us, with increased clarity, commitment, and an awakened appreciation of the instruction offered of the Sublime.  Meister Eckhart once said, “He who knows the Truth, knows that I am speaking the truth.”  Apollo’s Academy seeks to explore the intuitive awareness that lets the perception of Truth be known.

Even a Naturalist Believed in the Power of Poetry

Charles Darwin, the British naturalist, once wrote on the benefits of poetry and music:

Letter by Charles Darwin, late in his life, to a friend:

“Up to the age of thirty, or beyond it, poetry of many kinds, such as the works of Milton, Gray, Byron, Wordsworth, Coleridge, and Shelley, gave me great pleasure…But now for many years I cannot endure to read a line of poetry;…My mind seems to have become a kind of machine for grinding general laws out of large collections of facts…and if I had to live my life again, I would have made a rule to read some poetry and listen to some music at least once every week…The loss of these tastes is a loss of happiness, and may possibly be injurious to the intellect, and more probably to the moral character, by enfeebling the emotional part of our nature.”

*Charles Darwin: His Life Told in an Autobiographical Chapter & in a Selected Series of his Published Letters, Edited by Francis Darwin. London: William Clowes and Sons, Ltd.1892, p. 51.

Dr. Gilliam said, in his book Optics: The Mystical Poet’s Guide to the Science of Inner Sight, “Wisdom is knowing… Enough to love, And loving… Enough to know.” Thus, while agreeing with Darwin, he would go further and state that the loss of what poetry and music provide is greater than “…enfeebling the emotional part of our nature.” We render ourselves incapable of wisdom as well.

Further, in an age when education is most needed as a civilizing force for an ever expanding concept of culture and progress, it appears that those who see it for its utilitarian value are defining the nature of learning for us all. The reduction of education merely to a vision of its utilitarian aspect and benefit is to study the trees in the woods, rather than be committed to learning the truth about the whole forest. Buddha admonished us not to mistake the finger pointing at the moon for the moon itself.

Some of the benefits of joining the Academy:

  • Engage deeply in your spiritual growth. Discussions and seminars on a comparative treatment of mystical literature and thought will be available.
  • Have access to videotaped readings and discussions of Dr. Gilliam’s poetry and work, and of other poets, mystics, and significant works of interest presented and reviewed by Gilliam.
  • Access to Dr. Gilliam’s scholarly research and writings, for example, his extensive research study entitled, The Evolution of the Mystical Language of Love in St. John of the Cross. This work outlines, develops and discusses at length the comparative philosophical and religious sources found in that great Golden Age Spanish mystic and poet, St. John of the Cross, from Plato and Aristotle, Plotinus, Augustine and Aquinas to the Carmelite mystical and contemplative Order and tradition establish by St. John in 16th century Spain.
  • Discussions on the role and importance of religion and ritual in our personal and spiritual growth and development will be presented when appropriate.
  • Awaken your own creativity through poetry. Members will have access to poetry writing workshops, including discussions on the methods and mechanics of writing poetry.
  • Topics in science as they pertain to spirituality will be periodically and increasingly introduced and discussed with a guest scientist.
  • Videos and podcasts on various themes uploaded regularly into the pages of the Academy.
  • Buy the standard hardcover edition of the book, Optics: The Mystical Poet’s Guide to the Science of Inner Sight, and receive a 1 month free membership in Apollo’s Academy (a $19.95 value).

A secondary purpose of the academy will be to give voice to the many traditions the author himself has studied. Thus, his study—which earned him a double Ph.D. from Stanford University—tracing the philosophical and literary roots of Western and Eastern contemplative thought and practice will be explored, as well. The author will share his interest in other writers and thinkers, and will solicit suggestions from Academy members for topics of interest to be addressed by him, or by guests, who will be invited as Platform Speakers.
